East Bay Program to Highlight Womens Role as Agents of Change

Oakland — In celebration of Women’s International Day, the Women’s Global Leadership Initiative (WGLI) will hold “Women Defying Limits in the East Bay” from 6 to 9 p.m., on March 9, at Betti Ono Gallery, 1427 Broadway, Oakland, California.

The programs partners, Betti Ono Gallery and Show & Tell Concept Store, and co-sponsors: United Nations, Courage to Run, and East Bay Women’s Political Caucus ,will recognize “women who have found the courage to lead,” organizers say. Among the questions that will be answered are “What personal and professional obstacles have you overcome?” and “What change do you want to see for women in your community?”

WGLI also seeks to find women who serve as connectors in their communities. Executive Director, WGLI Diana Ruiz says, “We are calling on the women in the East Bay to make a commitment, and support women in their community who are hungry and are willing to do what it takes to invest in their future and their community. They can give hope to the women in their community, by sharing their expertise, mentoring, training or sponsoring a woman through a development program.”

The guest speaker on March 9 will be Annie Campbell Washington, newly elected Oakland City Council Member, and Janice Maxie-Reid, popular Bay Area jazz and gospel singer and Oakland resident, will be the featured performer. Spoken word artist and women’s rights advocate Samantha Akwei, also known as Brok’ N Sylance, will also perform.

Women’s International Day, sometimes called International Working Women’s Day, is celebrated around the world on March 8 each year.

WGLI, a Bay Area nonprofit organization, was created to support, educate and mentor women from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. WGLI provides the opportunity for women to invest in themselves and in their community.
